A minimum of 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
